“Hear from guest speaker Mercedes White Calf, Lakota Sioux Social Justice Advocate at the @brownhopeorg Power Hour tonight at 6pm!
Power Hour is an intentional space for Black, Brown, and Indigenous people to build community and heal from the impacts of racism.
Mercedes White Calf was born to a full-blood Lakota Sioux woman from Pine Ridge South Dakota and she grew up in Portland Oregon. A University of Oregon alumni with a Bachelor of Science degree in American Indian Education, Treaty & Policy and a Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship recipient. She enrolled at USC Gould School of Law to become an American Indian Treaty & Policy Attorney. Mercedes found herself experimenting with drugs and her life spiraled down quickly becoming homeless, jobless, and a methamphetamine addict living in the streets of L.A. After years of sleeping in tents and park benches, she was able to navigate restoring her housing, career, and self-healing. Mercedes dedicates her work toward ending all forms of oppression for her community.
