Apple has announced that it will be adding immersive music authoring tools to an upcoming version of Logic Pro later this year.

Following the arrival of Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos playback on the Apple Music service, the Logic Pro update marks a commitment to help artists create for the format.

With the release of iOS 14.6, music fans can now listen to tracks in the three-dimensional Dolby Atmos format on their iPhones and iPads. The update also brings lossless audio to all tracks on the platform for the first time.

Dolby Atmos is an immersive, object-based mixing format that gets decoded on your device. Playback will work on any headphones, but Apple maintains that the best way to experience the phenomenon is with a pair of AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, or Beats earbuds or cans.

Spatial Audio champion and Beats 1 host Zone Lowe asks the question we’re all thinking: “How are artists going to use this?” in an Apple Newsroom post about Spatial Audio. “Are they going to start creating music with the idea of a three-dimensional environment, as opposed to this two-channel environment?”

“Music in modern times has often been all about innovation”, he adds. “From multichannel recordings, to electric guitars, mics, and synthesizers, to tape echo and samplers, to MIDI and iPod — so many technologies have been invented to play, capture, record, mix, and share music. With Spatial Audio musicians, engineers, and producers have this amazing new tool to bring a 3D experience to millions of people. It all starts from one new tool for artists to experiment with, and then eventually you end up with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; you end up with Pet Sounds.”

To find out more, there’s a Spatial Audio roundtable with Sylvia Massy (Johnny Cash/Tool) and pop mixing royalty Manny Marroquin hosted by Zane Lowe on Apple Music at 9 am PST today (8 June).

There are thousands of Dolby Atmos tracks on Apple Music now to check out. In addition, a playlist of tracks that have been remixed for Spatial Audio is available to listen to now on Apple Music, featuring music from Kanye West, Prince, The Beatles, Diana Ross, Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock, Disclosure, and Billie Eilish.

Apple Music is available for a $9.99 monthly subscription.
