Portland Hip Hop Day was founded in 2015 as a result of a collaborative effort to address concerns and conflicts between the Portland Hip Hop scene and various agencies representing the City of Portland. As the result of continued relationship building and successful annual events between the city and Hip Hop community, in 2019 Hip Hop Day was extended as an official week celebration starting August 20th thru August 26th.

The Numberz radio station is providing a very unique listener and creator experience, by carving out a media space to empower communities of color to share their thoughts, concerns and celebrate each other. The intent of our current musical format is to give a full representation of the Black music experience, not just Hip Hop and R&B. Along with those genres, we play Reggae, House, Afro Beat, Jazz, Funk and Gospel. The primary purpose of The Numberz is to create media space for Black people and communities of color, in a city where gentrification has played a significant part in scattering their voices.

Being involved in The Numberz doesn’t require that you are a musician. Through our Community Playlist campaign we’re able to highlight change makers, activists, entrepreneurs and people making a positive impact, by asking them to share the music that moves and motivates them. We then turn that music into an hour mix that is then shared with everyone via our broadcast. Doing this creates a dialog in the community through those songs. We also offer airtime for community organizations to share event information that will benefit our listeners.

Cool Nutz is most known for his involvement and promotion of the Portland, OR and San Francisco Bay Area hip-hop scene.[2] He co-founded Jus Family Records in 1992 with Bosko Kante. His musical style originally used primarily G-funk synthesizer elements but has evolved to the addition of vocal and instrumental samples in his tracks.

In 1995, Scott co-founded the Portland Oregon Hip-Hop (POH-Hop) Festival.[3] He has worked very hard to create and maintain the hip-hop scene in Portland and has worked with many rappers from the bay area, most notably “E-40” and “Yukmouth.” In 1997, he signed the group G-Ism, made up of fellow Portland rappers Ray Ray and Young Randall to his label, Jus Family Records. They released their debut album, “On a Mission” in 1998, under Jus Family Records. G-Ism disbanded in 2001 following the tragic and untimely passing of Young Randall.

Cool Nutz is the radio host of the Breakout Show on KXJM JAM’N 107.5.[4] The show airs Sunday nights from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Along with fellow Jus Family Records affiliate, Maniac Lok, Cool Nutz is featured on Track 11, “Pussy Loud,” from the 2012 E-40 album The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 3.

Scott managed the 2012 Group Hug Tour for Kreayshawn to promote her debut album, Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay, released on Columbia Records.[5]

KXJM (107.5 MHz, “Jam’n 107.5”) is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Banks, Oregon and serving the Portland metropolitan area. KXJM’s studios and offices are in Tigard and the transmitter is located in Portland’s West Hills. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., and airs a Rhythmic CHR format.

On February 20, 2014, at Noon, KXJM relaunched as “JAM’N 107.5.” The music is focused on current Rhythmic hits, with some gold and re-current music in its library, as well as adding more Hip-Hop/R&B material while decreasing the Dance-Pop tracks. KXJM began using the slogan “Jams from Today & Back in the Day.” The station’s moniker and logo are based on sister station WJMN in Boston.[14]

During the latter weeks of December 2016 and the first two weeks of January 2017, KXJM began reducing the currents on its playlist, and shifted towards older hip hop hits.[15][16] The station is currently ranked #5 with a 5.0 share according to the Portland Nielsen Audio PPMs.[17]
